Living in The In-Between

Halfway2Heaven is the name of our home and farmstead nestled on the edge of a Southern Vermont mountaintop. My husband Peter and I named it one morning in early fall, waking to the sunrise and clouds having settled just below the due‑east skyline. It felt as if we were standing on a ledge between earth and sky—as if we were halfway into the heavens.

Our farmstead is the center of Halfway2Heaven. Here we grow what we can in rhythm with the seasons and the realities of a Vermont life with its changing chapters and its weathered, time-worn beauty. The land and home belonged to Peter’s grandparents, Clinton and Florence, and now we are building a modern-ish homestead as regenerative stewards of this land and life together.

This year, we have gone all in on building a farmstead full of flowers, herbs, and vegetables in our new in-ground gardens and thirteen raised beds. It is here that we plan to grow what we love and enough to feed ourselves, our family, and our community. It is here that we are planting roots and meeting the horizon one day at a time.

Our world is also made up of the ones who greet us at the door, follow us through the yard, and curl up close to us at the end of the day.

Letta is our athletic and graceful black Greyhound-Pointer-Lab, dreaming of days full of Frisbee chasing and swimming in Sunset Lake. Roxy is our caretaking, curious, and sensitive Dalmatian, watching everyone around her even when she is full body deep in a new hole she has dug in the yard.

Rocket and Maizey, our two formerly feral barn cats, have traded life in the barn for long naps on our couch. Rocket is as regal as a Siamese and is our fierce hunter who would prefer I carry him around all day, and Maizey loves her mother and prefers to sleep most of the time.

Rocky, Kazuki, Magique, Ceres, Ace, Roxie, Buster, and Grace are our Nigerian Dwarf goats, each with a little bit of mischief and whole a lotta love. They spend their days in cuddle puddle together, running through their yard and tunnel, butting each other, and vying for the sunniest spot in the playhouse. They love to hang out with Peter in the evenings grazing and getting into as many things as they can.
